You normally read the newspaper, watch television, listen to the radio, or browse the Internet. But you want more control over the specific sports news you receive, and you would rather not rely on the Internet. Furthermore, when you're traveling you feel frustrated if you can't get the sports news you want from the local media.

THE SOLUTION

You can now use the telephone to track your favorite teams without touching any of the telephone keys. The Sports Quote Center enables you to track every team in the four major sports - baseball, football, basketball, and hockey, including professional and college teams. You simply call a 900 number and tell the system which team, or which city, you are interested in tracking. For example, you might say, "the Boston Red Sox," or "Boston teams." If you say, "Boston teams," the system provides the scores of all the baseball, basketball, hockey, and football teams in the area.

The Sports Quote Center uses ReCite!, a natural language automatic speech recognition (ASR) software package developed by PureSpeech , a supplier of ASR technologies. The application's front-end boasts an active vocabulary of over 4,000 words. The back-end database, a sports reporting service that resides on the Worldwide Web, is updated every thirty minutes and is read to the caller through concatenation of prerecorded phrases.
